Sub-Group I:  Scripts   [5 boxes, 2.5 cubic feet]

        Series 1: Survivor / interviews  [3 boxes, 1.5 cubic feet]

        This series contains interviews with survivors of Hersbruck Concentration Camp.  Professor Luchterhand numbered these interviews.  Each interview begins by listing the interviewee’s first name, the concentration camp/camps they were incarcerated in, the dates of their imprisonment, and other information that he felt was relevant.  The second and the third boxes have similar details of the people that he interviewed but with more comprehensive, typewritten questionnaires.

        Series 2: Survivor / more interviews  [1 box, .5 cubic feet]

        This series continues Professor Luchterhand’s interviews with survivors of Camp Hersbruck.  These oral interviews, however, are filed alphabetically; one file has people whose last name begins with A (Ascherl) continuing on through H (for Hogner); another file contains interviews with people whose name begins K through M; the final one of these folders has names that begin with N and continue through V.  There are also more files here with additional survivor interviews, questionnaires, and files that contain assorted handwritten and typewritten notes.

        Series 3: Survivor / research notes [1 box, .5 cubic feet]

        This box is comprised of miscellaneous files related to Professor Luchterhand’s comprehensive research notes and more interviews with survivors.  There is a folder here marked “Archival Material”, which also contains more research material and more notes on interviews.

        Series 4: Research material / general    [3 bxs, 1.5 cu ft]

        This series bears numbered files (from I through VII) of assorted research material.  Box one begins with a “File List”, has a “Book Outline (Doggerwerk)”, a file titled “Workschedules, Deathrate” and professional translations of correspondences.  The second box (numbered VIII-XIV) contains research material, called “Lenz Letters”, “Jaggerstab”, “Kranz, ”Speer” (plus a letter from Albert Speer), “Various Notes & Transcripts”.  The third box, also containing research material (numbered XV-XXIII), bears files like “Martin, Karg”, “Records of Bills from Dachau, Flossberg, Hersbruck”, “UN”, “Kolb-Bergen Belsen”, “Nazi Organiz. Members”, and the “Revolt of Eysses”.

       Series 5:  Research material /surveys, abstracts, theory [2 bxs., 1 cu ft]

       These two boxes of research material contain “Theory Abstracts”, “Data from Toni Siegert”, a file titled “SS”, another one “Nazi Genocide Theory”, a folder named “I Diportati” (the deported), and other miscellaneous notes on theoretical material.

        Series 6: Research material / military documents   [1 bx., .5 cu ft]

        This box bears research notes on militarization.  There are also a number of folders containg “Michael Roiger documents” with regard to “war atrocity”.  This series has a number of photocopied documents as well as some items regarding the Hersbruck Concentration Camp.

        Series 7: Research material / Hans-Friedrich Lenz  [2 bxs., 1 cu ft]

        This series is comprised of two boxes of research material related to Hans-Friedrich Lenz, secretary to the generals in the Hersbruck Concentration Camp.  The first box includes correspondence from Karl Meier (some of it translated), a folder titled “Lenz/Wieland/Ernst Correspondence”, another “Lenz History Outtakes”, and one about “pre-Hersbruck History” (some of it translated). The second box of research material related to H. F. Lenz begins with an index of documents.  One folder is titled “Lenz Correspondence-1980s”.  There are also several folders that contain a Hans-Friedrich Lenz manuscript with the title Tell me, Reverend, How Did You Get Into the SS (one folder of this manuscript is in German, and another is translated into English).  There are several more folders that contain a draft of this Lenz memoir.  Finally, there is some more printed material regarding the history of Hersbruck Concentration Camp.

         Series 8:   Research material / maps, charts, camp layout

        Series 8 contains a number of folders of tables, charts, maps, and layouts of Hersbruck, Forrenbach, Happurg Concentration Camps.  There are also overhead slides for projectors, black and white photographs of the Hersbruck camp, as well as a folder of booklets on the local history of Hersbruck.  (There are also some maps and charts of different concentration camps in two oversized boxes).
 

Sub-Group III:   Doggerwerk  Project    [2 boxes, 1 cubic feet]

        Series   9:  Doggerwerk / drafts, notes [1 bx., .5 cubic feet]

        This series is comprised primarily of drafts containing Professor Luchterhand’s project, Doggerwerk.  There is a folder titled “Working Outline” of his work.   Another one is marked “Methodology”.  There are folders titled “Doggerwerk, Chapter 1, ‘The Setting’”, another one is “Doggerwerk, Chapter 2, ‘From Air War to Doggerwerk’”, etc.

        Series 10: Doggerwerk / interpretation, theory, outline  [1 bx, .5 cu ft]

        Series 10 continues with items relating to Doggerwerk; a working outline, notes on interpretation, and lectures on Doggerwerk.  There is a folder containing  oral history notes, and notes in general.  Folders titled “Conclusions” and “Interpretations” are also related to Doggerwerk.

        Series 11: Published works / by E. Luchterhand   [1 bxs, 1 cu ft]

        This series contains publications written by Professor Elmer Luchterhand.  One is titled An Oral History Exploration of Community Response to Unsystematic Genocide (1980).  Another one is the Early & Late Effects of Imprisonment in Nazi Concentration Camp (1970).  There is one called The Focused Life History in Studying Involvement in a Genocidal Situation in Nazi Germany (1981).  In addition, this series bears several typescripts of his works.
 

        Series 12: Published works / E. Luchterhand & others [1 bx, .5 cu ft]

        Series 12 has some more writings by Professor Luchterhand in assorted publications and a curriculum project.  However, there are also writings here in publications by others, such as Bernt Engelmann who wrote United Against Justice & Freedom, and a collection of poems titled Oral History & the Holocaust by Julie Heifetz. There are also some publishers’ notes and publishers correspondence.

        Series 13: Articles / newspaper clippings [8 folders + 1 oversized bx]

        This series contains several folders of newspaper clippings, articles about the Hersbruck camp, photocopies from book excerpts, published booklets, and some documents referring to the ‘monuments’ at Hersbruck.  In addition, there is an oversized box where newspaper clippings, more recently dated, mostly in German, can also be viewed.

        Series 14: Requests / for Grants   [2 folders]

        Series 14 contains requests/applications for research grants in order to study experiences of survivors in concentration camps during World War II.  There is also a request for a grant addressed to the National Endowment for the Humanities.

        Series 15: Correspondence / Brooklyn College [1 folder]

        The folder in this series is comprised of correspondence to/from Brooklyn College.  There is a letter addressed to the President of Brooklyn College in 1976, President John W. Kneller, as well as a memorandum to him.  There is also a Course Description of Professor Luchterhand’s Sociology Class (1969) and a Required Reading packet for another Sociology Class (1980).

      Series 16: Elmer Luchterhand / notes on collection [1 folder]

        Series 16 bears comprehensive sheets and notes of the Elmer Luchterhand collection taken when these papers initially arrived at Brooklyn College.
